Gilligan
2001 - 2024
Quarter Horse Gelding
Gilligan was rescued with Ruby when we got called in by local law enforcement officers to assist with a severe owner neglect case. The two arrived at our South location in October of 2023, both horses having a body condition score of 1. They were loaded with parasites, had heart murmurs from being so emaciated, and were in their mid 20s. We started them on a very slow re-feeding program and began to notice the weight come back little by little.
Gilligan had a nasty wound on his right hind leg when we rescued him, most likely something small that went untreated for far too long. Because of this neglect this infected festered into a fleshy growth that eventually would need to be surgically derided. We cleaned the wound multiples times a day and waited for Gilligan to get strong enough to safely undergo surgery.
But that day never came. Just a month after Ruby passed Gilligan went down with similar symptoms. Despite his brain telling his body to stand up, his body could not respond properly. He had the same symptoms as Ruby and next to him we found more candy wrappers.
Gilligan went to Clemson for a necropsy and bloodwork went to Cornel, we are heartbroken at the loss of these very special horses.
