Ruby

2000 - 2023
Arab Mare

Ruby was a severe owner neglect rescue we saved in October of 2023 from a small town in SC. She was seized by local animal control officers along with another horse, Gilligan. Both horses had a body condition score of 1, were loaded with parasites, had heart murmurs from being so emaciated, and aged in their 20s.

Ruby had severe arthritis in both of her hind legs around her hocks, and a crooked cannon bone from an old rodeo injury that never healed right. Ruby's teeth were so sharp they cut our hands when the vet came to look at her, she couldn't swallow any of her hay and would just spit it back out. After receiving dental work her teeth had improved. Ruby did choked with us so her food needed to be very wet.

We had the pleasure of loving and caring for Ruby for 7 weeks and 3 days. For that time she knew what a full belly felt like, had warm blankets for the cold nights, and unconditional love. She made steady progress in her weight gain journey with a noticeable difference in rib coverage after a month.

One day Ruby fell down in the barn and couldn't get up. She was extremely gassy, disoriented, had an elevated heart & respiratory rate, and muscle tremors. We found M&Ms in Ruby's paddock and suspect theobromine poisoning from chocolate.

Unfortunately her bloodwork was inconclusive and we still do not have answers for what happened to her, but we do know that we are grateful we got to love on her for the time we did.
